Walter Spicer, 80, of Dothan, passed away Sun., April 4, 2010, at his home.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thurs., April 8, at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Hosea Parker officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at 2 p.m. in Andalusia Memorial Cemetery with Byrd Funeral Home on West Main Street directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 until 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
He was born March 31, 1930, in Covington County and lived the early years of his life there. He later enlisted in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam War and also served in Germany. He retired from service after more than 20 years. While stationed at Ft. Benning, Ga., he met and married his wife, Mickey. Following his military retirement, he moved to Andalusia where he was employed with Anderson Peanut Company for many years and also was engaged in cattle farming. He was a resident of Dothan for the past 10 years. He was an avid fisherman and attended Malvern Baptist Church.
He is predeceased by his wife, Mickey; his parents, Parnell and Annie Lee Spicer; and a stepson.
Survivors include a sister, Nell Bledsole of Andalusia; a daughter, Mary Courtney of Dothan; two stepchildren; several grandchildren including Andrew Courtney of Dothan; several nieces and nephews; and other family members.
