The Straughn Tigers split wins with Wicksburg in the Relay for Life benefit doubleheader Monday afternoon.

Straughn won the first game 7-5, and lost the second game, 12-10.

Straughn 7, Wicksburg 5

Straughn coach John Fussell said overall in the first game, the team did well.

“I thought we did a pretty good job of being focused,” he said. “The pitchers didn’t do a very good job of locating, but they managed. One good thing was they managed to get out of jams.

“If they had hit their spots, they wouldn’t have been in jams,” he said. “The good news on that was that they were able to work through it.”

The winning pitcher was Zack Stinson and Josh Dewrell got the save.

Dewrell was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two singles; Luke Fussell was 1-for-3; Nick Allen was 1-for-4 with one RBI; Drew Jones was 1-for-4 with one double and two RBIs; Cody Hughes was 1-for-3 with one single and one RBI; Zack Stinson was 2-for-3 with two singles; Zack Turvin was 1-for-2.

Wicksburg 12, Straughn 10

Fussell said the second game was the total opposite of the first.

“We just for some reason or another acted like we didn’t want to be here,” he said. “There wasn’t any enthusiasm. We got up 3-0 and after that we got behind and stayed behind. We were down 12-6 in the bottom of the seventh and came all the way back in the seventh and made it 12-10 with the bases loaded and two outs and had a chance to win the ball game.

“The problem is that it should have never been that way. It should have been Straughn 12, and Wicksburg 6 in the top of the seventh. we waited too long to play baseball.”

The losing pitcher was Allen.

Straughn moves to 26-6 on the season.

Dewrell was 1-for-4; Fussell was 3-for-4 with two doubles and one single; Allen was 3-for-4 with five RBIs and one home run; Jones was 3-for-4 with one home run and one RBI; Turvin was 1-for-4 with one single; Zack Lunsford was 2-for-2 with two singles; and Levi Lumpkin was 1-for-2 with one single and one RBI.

Straughn will host Luverne on Friday at 5 p.m. If the Tigers win one game against Luverne, they will be able to host the first round of the Class 3A state playoffs on April 16.
