A Florala child is dead after being run over by a school bus Thursday.

Chief Sonny Bedsole said the incident occurred shortly after 3 p.m. near the Florala Villa’s apartment complex and involved a young girl.

Bedsole said initial reports show the child “either got off at the wrong stop or at the wrong time” and was not seen by the school bus driver.

“Apparently the child walked in front of the bus and from what the driver said didn’t know the child had been run over until people were yelling, ‘stop,’ ” he said.

Bedsole said the identity and age of the child has yet to be determined, and the Alabama State Trooper’s traffic homicide division is en route to investigate the accident.
