Joseph Belford Donald, known to friends as both “Joe” and “Joey,” 60, of Andalusia, passed away in his sleep Sat., April 3, 2010, after a long battle with cancer.
He is 1967-1968 graduate of Andalusia High School. He served as an aide at Andalusia Hospital before entering the U.S. Army in 1969. After his military service, where he attained his lifelong dream of learning to fly, his work centered around automotive repair work in Andalusia, Montgomery and Houston.
During this time, he owned his own plane, and when in Texas, he would often fly home to see his parents and his mother to see her sister back in Texas. In Houston, he became a managing partner of a Firestone store and raised and showed Tennessee Walking horses. In 1994, he married his high school sweetheart, Aurelia Scherf. They returned to Andalusia in 1998 where he opened D& Automotive and enjoyed restoring classic cars.
He is survived by his wife, Aurelia; his son, Joey Donald Jr.; sisters-in-law, Amy (Charles) Gregory of Huntsville and Dodie (Dan) Glowa of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., the Rev. Terry Scherf of Berea, Ky., and Esther Scherf of New Mexico.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Flo Donald.
A memorial service will be held at Andalusia’s First Methodist Church today, Sat., April 10, at 1 p.m. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the service.
Davis Watkins Funeral Home of Defuniak Springs, Fla., is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Heifer Organization or the First Methodist Church.
