The Andalusia Bulldogs fell to city rival Opp Monday 7-6 on senior night.

This was the last game for the Bulldogs’ baseball team, which finished the year with a 14-20 record.

Andalusia was close to making the playoffs this year, but Clarke County stood in its way, beating the Bulldogs 6-5 last Thursday night, and ending all hopes for a playoff berth.

However, Friday night was a different story for Andalusia.

The Bulldogs prevented Clarke County from taking the No. 1 seed in Class 4A, Area 3 leading into the playoffs, winning 9-3.

“It was a pretty good game and I thought we fought back hard,” Andalusia coach Jonathan Rasberry said. “The only negative thing I can say is when we scored, we gave it right back. We can’t ever do that, but the kids battled again late in the game and had an opportuinty to win the game.”

Rasberry said that the close loss to Opp is similar to how the season went overall.

“We would get a lead and turn around and give it up,” he said. “We’ve almost lost 10 one-run or last inning games. We’re 14-20 and if you win 10 games, you’re 24-10.

“I think we’re trying to get there,” he said. “I’m really proud of the seniors because they have fought through much adversity on the team. We lost three starters at the beginning of the year, and I’m especially proud of the seniors’ attitudes.”

On Monday night, Opp got on board in the second inning on an RBI single from Josh Thompson to score Jantzen Flowers.

Andalusia quickly answered back with an RBI single from Rob Maddox to score Shane Culbreth to tie the game up.

The Bobcats scored one run in the fifth inning and two in the sixth inning to take a 4-1 lead, but the Bulldogs fought back adding three in the sixth inning on four hits to tie the game for the second time.

In the fifth inning, Opp courtesy runner Drew Bowers scored on an RBI double from Flowers.

Then, Britt Wilson came through for the Bobcats in the sixth inning hitting a two-run double to score Drew Smith and Thompson.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, senior Marcus Ingram got his first hit of the season when he scored courtesy runner Justin Jernigan.

Ingram was out for the season because of a shoulder injury.

Ingram and Maddox later came around on senior Aaron Norris’ double to tie the game up 4-4.

In the top of the seventh, the Bobcats tore away from the tie as Hunter Jones singled Trey Short in and Smith singled Hunter Roeser in to score.

“We played seven innings and came from behind and I was pleased with that,” Opp coach Michael Cassady said. “Out of 20 people, 16 players played and had a big part in the game — whether it was running, hitting, baseruning whatever it was.”

Smith later came around on a sacrifice grounder from Britt Wilson.

The Bulldogs didn’t give up in the bottom of the seventh as Zack Ward started with a single and senior Lee Enzor walked to put runners on first and second.

Dilan Manring then hit a single to load the bases with no outs.

Seniors Mack and Culbreth then hit RBI singles to score Ward and Enzor to give the Bulldogs one run to tie the game up.

Britt Wilon earned the win for the Bobcats, pitching 1.0 innings, allowing three hits and two runs.

Culbreth and Manring were caught in a double play to end the game for the Bobcats.

Andalusia’s Ward was 3-for-4 with three singles and one run; Enzor was 1-for-4 with one single and one run; Manring was 3-for-4 with three singles; Culbreth was 2-for-4 with two singles and one RBI; Mack was 1-for-4 with one single and one RBI; Maddox was 3-for-3 with three singles, one run and one RBI; Ingram was 1-for-3 with one single, one RBI and one run; Norris was 1-for-3 with one double and two RBIs; and Jay Brewer was 1-for-3 with one single.

Opp’s Thompson was 1-for-5 with one single, one RBI and one run; Wilson was 1-for-5 with one double and three RBIs; Sasser was 1-for-5 with one double and one run; Gavin Free was 2-for-4 with one single and one double; Flowers was 2-for-4 with one single, one double, one run and one RBI; Short was 1-for-2 with one double and one run; Ziglar was 1-for-1 with one one single, one RBI and one run; and Smith was 3-for-4 with three singles, one RBI and two runs.

Opp will host Jackson Friday night in the first round of the Class 4A state playoffs. The first game of a doubleheader is at 4:30 p.m.

If both teams split, a game will be played Saturday at 2 p.m.
