JACKSONVILLE (AP) — Texting while driving is now banned in at least two Alabama towns.

In March, Jacksonville became the first to ban the dangerous practice, citing an elderly couple that was injured in January when another driver struck their car while text messaging on a cell phone. This month, Roanoke also banned texting while driving, with the law going into effect April 1.

Jacksonville Mayor Johnny Smith says so far, no one has been ticketed under the new law. The city charges $25 for the first offense, $50 for the second and $100 for the third and subsequent offenses.

More than 20 states and many cities across the country ban texting while driving.
