An Opp woman was jailed Monday for allegedly disposing of evidence that implicated her grandson in a recent firearm theft.

Inv. Greg Jackson with the Covington County Sheriff’s Office said, Geraldine “Gerry” Ezell, 57, was charged with receiving stolen property and tampering with evidence.

“This is a crazy case,” Jackson said. “It began when we arrested her grandson, Ashdon Edward Tate, on April 6 for allegedly breaking into a barn and stealing a boat motor and battery.”

Jackson said Tate was subsequently charged with third-degree burglary, second-degree theft of property and possession of burglary tools. Additionally, he was identified as a suspect in a theft of a Remington rifle that was taken from a home in Babbie.

“We informed (Ezell) of that and asked her to check her residence to see if she could locate the gun, since her grandson lived with her,” he said. “She later said the gun was not in the residence; however, a confidential informant told us the gun was found in the home, and Ezell (allegedly) threw it into the woods to dispose of it.”

Jackson said the gun was recovered from the woods, and Ezell turned herself into authorities Monday. She was booked into the Covington County Jail and released on a $13,000 bond.

Ezell, who served as the human resources manager for the city of Opp, resigned from the position Tuesday morning, Opp Mayor H.D. Edgar said.
