“Hands” by David Hatchett is spotlighted as “best of show” in the current LBW Community College student art exhibit on display now through May 4, 2010.

Set on pedestals are sets of stark-white plaster castings of hands.

“The details of the hands are amazing,” said Misti Purvis, LBWCC art instructor and gallery director.

“Our goal is to discover and develop artistic talent,” she said. “For 25 years, we’ve hosted the annual student art exhibition to recognize excellence in the visual arts.”

The exhibit features 71 pieces of art, including paintings, drawings in black and white, color drawings, two-dimensional designs, and three-dimensional designs.

“Many of the students painted fantasy or surrealism paintings. Some depict an underwater fantasy or daydream. These works reflect the artist Marc Chagall in ‘I and the Village,’” Purvis said.

Students also created sculptures and relief images from recycled cardboard and everyday objects are duplicated in clay.

A public reception is planned for 4-6 p.m. on Thurs., April 29, 2010, in the LBWCC Art Gallery, located in the William H. McWhorter Learning Resource Center on the Andalusia campus. The gallery is free and open Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
