The Covington County High School Class of 1960 held their 50th class reunion Sat., April 17, 2010, in the Florala Ladies Club House with 31 class members present.

Upon arrival, guests found tables laden with memorabilia from high school days. Adding to these displays was beautiful organ music reminding attendees of days gone by.

Sue Stinson Goolsby played with ease as she was familiar with the organ – an instrument donated by her to the club house.

Everyone registered and received a name tag, provided by Melinda Martin Mansour, just in case 50 years had brought about changes in appearance. There were cards of thanks to former teachers to sign as well as a get well card for Charles Aplin who had suffered an accident causing his absence.

Goers then browsed around visiting with class members and spouses before discobvering a table holding fresh fruit, nuts, fudge, cookies, cheese balls and crackers. These goods were graciously prepared and served by Ramona Jones Ennis and Frankie Redmon Waldon with help from Myra McAdams Evans. Iced sodas were provided by Wayne Campbell.

A nostalgic video presentation was played for members who chose to view. Time was given in memory of the five deceased class members: Larry Willette, Barbara Rawls Thames, McArthur Gray, Evelyn Jones Dungan and Richard McCurley. Dr. James Barnes assisted Jim Yeaman in the video setup. Many memories flooded the minds of classmates as they viewed teachers and clas groups from grades one through 12.

After a brief business meeting conducted by class president Wayne Campbell, the group was honored to have Florala Mayor Robert Williamson speak briefly concerning Florala’s future before introducing classmate Nolan Laird. A Precision Image photographer took a class picture which included five past class members, James Cobb, Shepherd Byrd, Sidney Price Bailey, Tommy Fowler and Ken Petrey.

Before dining, on a meal of BBQ pork and trimmings, the blessing was given by classmate Larry Presley.

Special guests attending were Joann Geohagan, Murray and Nann Johnson and David Martin, a friend of several classmates and brother to classmate Melinda Martin Monsour.

Classmate Hilda Kimbril Joiner and her gracious husband Edward Leon invited everyone to their beautiful lakeside home, which was decorated with opulent appointments that complimented the open airy feeling as guests looked out over the water. Good comments and thanks were given to Joiner’s sister, Sheila Anderson, who helped host the part but more importantly gave her sister a kidney a few years back. All who attended gave thanks to both acts of giving.

None lacked for food as they dined on an array of sandwich fixings, cake pies, key lime ball, relishes and delectable sweets worthy of any recipe exchange. Great food and fellowship were had by all, and the group plans to meet next year.
