MOBILE — Opp’s Bobcats will be watching the weather today to determine whether or not they can proceed with the second round of the Class 4A state playoffs today.

Opp’s first game against UMS-Wright was canceled due to inclement weather Friday night at Radcliff Field.

After a 1 hour, and 33-minute delay, the game resumed in the top of the second inning with Opp’s Josh Thompson at the plate on a 1-2 count.

The second round will resume at 4 p.m. today, weather permitting.

Opp gave UMS-Wright something to think about over night when short stop Alex Banks hit a solo home run off UMS-Wright’s Chase Williamson to give his team a 1-0 edge before the game was called due to weather.

“We can’t do anything about the weather,” Opp coach Michael Cassady said. “The game is scheduled for 4 o’clock (today) and we’re going to go back out there and try to get it in and play.”

When asked how he deals with these types of situations, Cassady said the team sticks to its routine.

“We’re going to meet and go over the game plan (Friday night) after dinner,” he said. “We’re going to get a good night’s rest and go back out to Satsuma’s field and do a little hitting and go over to UMS and try to play the game again. We’re going to keep them busy.”

One thing that the Bobcats proved Friday night was that Williamson is a pitcher that allows hits.

The Bobcats hit two balls as pop ups and one ball on a ground-out. Two batters walked.

“Almost every kid we had up there hit off him,” Cassady said. “We’ve got to play defense and throw strikes and keep the momentum and take it to the start of the first game (today).

“I hope everybody stays and comes back (today) for the games,” he said.
