AHS girls tennis team to vie for state success

Andalusia girls tennis coach Daniel Bulger said his team needs to “play our game” at the Class 4A state tournament in Montgomery at Lagoon Park today.

“I believe the biggest key for us is to play our game,” he said. “We are not the hardest hitters, so we need to keep the ball in play and allow the other person to make the unforced errors.”

Like the boys team, the girls’ first round opponent was determined Wednesday night.

Bulger said the one thing the girls need to keep doing is not giving up.

“We definitely need to keep fighting and play every point like it is the last point,” he said.”They did that at the sectional tournament. We had a couple of matches won in which we lost the first set at sectionals.

“It was big for us to be able to come back after losing that first set,” he said. “It would have been real easy for them to get frustrated, but that didn’t happen.”

Bulger said the girls have already accomplished a goal they set at the beginning of the year, and that this week will allow the team to gain much-needed experience.

“Our goal was to get back to the state tournament at the beginning of the year,” Bugler said. “Now that we have been successful, I want us to have a good showing, but also learn from the experience. We are a young team with only one senior so hopefully this week will be a building block for next year.”

Match times and opponents were not available when the Star-News went to press Wednesday.
