Florala to add new truck parking option

Owner/operators of 18-wheelers in Florala will soon have a new parking option, after council members agreed Monday to allow overnight parking at the city’s industrial park.

The item first came up for discussion at the council’s last meeting but was tabled so that city officials could research how revenue could be generated from it.

One such suggestion was to install parking meters; however, council members agreed Tuesday to implement a permit system that would charge truckers $50 per year to use the property.

City ordinance prohibits the overnight parking of 18-wheelers and trailers in residential areas and city streets inside the city limits.

“We’ve had several residents approach us about a place to park,” said city clerk Kathy Rathel. “This resolution would allow no more than one trailer to one tractor, meaning each truck could only park one trailer.”

Councilman Jimmy Waldrop said he hoped truckers parking alongside Florala’s Lake Jackson and inside the Piggly Wiggly parking lot will make use of new parking area.

Violators could face a fine up to $250.

Temporary permits will be issued for short stays. Council members are expected to adopt the resolution and finalize permit fees at its next meeting.
