Three Andalusia tennis players will play today in the semifinal round at the Class 4A state tennis tournament in Montgomery at Lagoon Park.

Andalusia’s Mayur Patel, Chris Smith and Jackson Moore all earned second round victories.

Patel defeated St. James’ Kevin Varghese 6-2, 6-0 in No. 3 singles ; Smith defeated Brooks’ Taylor Robertson 7-6, 6-4 in No. 4 singles; and Moore defeated Douglas’ Mark Miller 6-0, 6-4 in No. 6 singles.

All three had first round byes.

In other boys action, Jake Ricardy lost to Guntersville’s Aaron Triplett 6-3, 6-1 in No. 1 singles; Mitchell Clark lost to Oneonta’s Zach Page 6-2, 6-3 in No. 2 singles; and Alex Evans lost to Douglas’ Josh Walker 7-6, 6-4 in No. 5 singles, after defeating Brooks’ Justin Coleman 6-0, 6-2 in the first round.

“We’re just excited to be able to play in the second day of the tournament,” Andalusia boys tennis coach Perry Dillard said. “They played well. It wasn’t anything they did that much better than their opponents. They took care of business in the early rounds and afforded us the opportunity to keep playing. It’s always good to be playing on the second day.”

Andalusia lost to West Point 6-0, 6-0 in No. 1 doubles; Andalusia defeated Haleyville 6-2, 6-3 in No. 2 doubles, and then lost to UMS-Wright 6-1, 6-1; and Oneonta defeated Andalusia 6-3, 6-1 in No. 3 doubles.

In girls action, Andalusia’s Aubrey Boyington defeated DAR’s Hanna Beck 6-3, 7-6 in the first round, and lost to Cherokee County’s Haley Highfield 6-1, 6-0 in the second round in No. 1 singles; Brooks’ Madi Yates defeated Andalusia’s Tally Morrow 6-3, 6-0 in No. 2 singles; Brooks’ Sara Skipworth defeated Andalusia’s Lauren Beasley 6-2, 6-0 in No. 3 singles; DAR’s Meghan Turner defeated Andalusia’s Kaitlin Jeter 6-3, 6-0 in No. 4 singles; DAR’s Alex Mills defeated Andalusia’s Anna Bay McCord 6-2, 6-0 in No. 5 singles; and Brooks’ Eliza Ritter defeated Andalusia’s Maggie Jones 6-1, 6-2 in the second round in No. 6 singles. Jones won the first round over Plainview’s Casey Miller 6-4, 6-2.

“We played well,” Andalusia girls tennis coach Daniel Bulger said. “I was proud of those two to get wins and it’s something to build on for next year.”

St. James defeated Andalusia 6-1, 6-3 in No. 1 doubles; St. James defeated Andalusia 6-3, 6-1 in No. 2 doubles; and St. James defeated Andalusia 6-3, 6-0 in No. 3 doubles.

As of Thursday night, Andalusia sat in fifth place with 17 points for the boys; and the girls finished with four.

Andalusia’s Mayur Patel and Chris Smith will start their second day of tennis at the state tournament at 8 a.m. today.
