From a plant sale to arts and crafts fair to music show and family movie under the stars, Covington County will be a bustling place today. With clouds and winds, but little chance of rain, in the forecast, it should be a perfect day to enjoy the events.

Spring Plant Sale

For the plant lovers in the family, the Covington Master Gardeners will hold its annual Spring Plant Sale today from 8 a.m. until everything is gone. The event will be held at the Old Merrill Motors Building on South Cotton Street.

On sale, will be many varieties of native plants to the Andalusia region.

In addition, there will be an opportunity to have your soil pH tested for $2. Just bring a cup of soil.

AJWC Three Notch Market

For those who enjoy arts and crafts, the Andalusia Junior Woman’s Club’s first-ever Three Notch Market begins at 9 a.m. today.

The event is being held in the Power Plant Market Place on Historic Central Street in downtown Andalusia and features everything one could imagine, including photography, plants, jewelry, design and artwork, children’s clothing and hair bows, embroidery and quilting.

And there is no need to go home if you get hungry, there are plenty of food vendors serving up pizza, Italian cuisine, hotdogs, hamburgers, homemade goods and much more.

Admission is $3.

Parking is available downtown and at the parking lot of First Baptist Church. The AJWC will run shuttles from FBC to the market place throughout the day.

Lew Childre Memorial Steel Guitar Show

Music lovers, alike are sure to enjoy the third annual Lew Childre Memorial steel guitar show held in Opp, today, in the conference center at LBWCC.

Veteran musicians Joe Wright and Carco Clave will be the featured performers for the event.

Wright is a hall of fame steel guitar player and singer, was part of Charlie Pride’s band for 14 years.

Clave is considered by many to be a musician’s musician. He is one of the most seasoned players in Nashville. His work and mastery of many instruments has owned him a valuable reputation in many professional situations.

Also performing will be Harlan Burton, Jimmy Powell, Jack Goodson, Clyde Bloodsworth, Gordon Dodson and Lamar Morris.

Performances are scheduled to begin at noon.

There will be a $10 donation taken at the door for the event.

Coterie Club’s Movie Under the Stars.

The second annual “Movie Under the Stars,” sponsored by the Coterie Club will begin at 6:30 p.m. today at the Kiwanis Fairgrounds.

“We will be showing ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks the Squeakquel,’” Jennifer Palmer of the Coterie Club said.

Palmer said no coolers are allowed, but there will be pizza, popcorn, candy and nachos on sale, as well as tattoos and glow necklaces and bracelets for the children.

Admission is $4 for ages 2 and up.

“We want everyone to come out and be reminiscent of the old drive in,” Palmer said.

Ducks Unlimited annual banquet

The local chapter of Ducks Unlimited will hold its annual banquet tonight at the Covington Kiwanis building.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with a seafood dinner by Buster’s Seafood from Chatom to be served at 7 p.m. featuring boiled and fried shrimp, catfish, chicken fingers, all the fixings, plus “the best coleslaw there is,” said local sponsor Carolyn Stokes of Stokes Sporting Goods.

Advanced tickets, which are available at Stokes, from Jeff Bullard at Massey and at Cotton Ford Tractor, are $40 for singles, $60 per couple. At the door, tickets are $50 for a single ticket, $70 per couple.

A live auction will also be held, starting at 7:30 p.m., which includes a variety of firearms, DU merchandise, decoys and other items. A silent auction will also be held in conjunction with the event.

All proceeds will be donated to the Ducks Unlimited organization to help protect the hatching habitats of ducks.
