Still time to purchase luminarias

Relay for Life luminarias are still on sale for the May 7 event.

Publicity chair Susan Byrd said they have sold a great number of these, but this year’s goal is to have the luminaries all around the entire track.

“We want people to know this is a way that we pay tribute to ones who are still fighting the battle, and the ones who have become our angels,” she said.

Byrd said there are three luminaria options for people to choose from, which include “In honor,” for those still fighting cancer; “In remembrance” for those who have passed away from cancer; and a new one for caretakers of cancer patients.

“The cost is $5 each and some people just put their names on them, while others go as far as attaching a photo,” Byrd said. “Really, they can be decorated any way.”

Byrd said the luminarias are available at Darby’s Village Pharmacy, South Central Agency or by calling her at 496-2353.

“If I’m coming to town, I’ll be happy to bring the luminarias to them,” she said.

Byrd said they will light the luminarias at 9 p.m. at the Relay for Life event.

“They will place the luminarias through the night around the track,” she said. “At 9, they will ask the survivors to come up. The survivors will hand out glow sticks to put in the bags in honor of someone.”

In addition to the luminaries, Relay for Life organizers are also selling raffle tickets for an autographed football signed by Alabama head football coach Nick Saban.

Byrd said the tickets are one for $3 or three for $5 and can be purchased through any committee member or through Sonia Godwin at the Department of Leisure Services at Johnson Park.

Byrd said there are currently 40 teams registered for the event and $38,920 turned in, which is a long way from the $117,000 goal organizers have set.

Relay for Life will kick off at 6 p.m., and the survivor lap will be at 6:30 p.m.
