What do classical ballet, fiddle music, the Commodores and “Sweet Home, Alabama” have in common?
They are all a part of the Andalusia Ballet’s Spring Showcase, which this year will be a “Salute to Alabama.”
Dance teacher Callie Edgar Hatchett said instructors picked “lively Alabama fiddle music” for this year’s classical ballet performance, and chose a number of songs either written by or about Alabama for a whole section of tap and jazz dances.
“We listened to a lot of fiddle music before we chose a piece by Roy Crawford, who’s an Alabama artist,” she said of the ballet.
There are lots of mixes and remixes of “Sweet Home, Alabama,” she said. “Brick House” by the Alabama band the Commodores, “Stars Fell on Alabama,” and the Auburn and Alabama fight songs are among the other musical selections.
“The students love it,” Hatchett said. “At first they looked at us a little strangely, but now they like it a lot.”
The Andalusia Ballet’s graduating seniors, Daley Kappenman and Lauren Powell, will each perform a solo and Kate Barrow will be performing the Peasant Pas de Deux from Giselle with Jarrod Sickles from the Montgomery Ballet.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under.  Tickets will be available at the door and may be purchased in advance at the Andalusia Ballet located behind Ansley Place on East Three Notch Street.
