There are three days remaining before Friday’s deadline to register to vote in the June 1 primary election.
To date, there are 18,878  active registered voters in Covington County, said Sammy Glover with the county Board of Registrar’s office.
Glover said that number has increased significantly “in the last eight to 10 days.”
“I’d estimate somewhere around 50 people have come in, which is a tremendous increase when compared to what we’ve been getting,” he said. “They’re not really saying why they’ve come in, but I think it’s because not only of the race but also because they’re new residents in the area.”
Additionally, there are 2,395 inactive voters on the “list,” Glover said.
“These people are registered to vote, but because they have to update some information, they’ve been put on the inactive list,” he said. “Their name is on the list and they can vote, but they just have to update that information before they’re given a ballot.”
For those who have yet to register to vote, all applications must be in the Hillcrest Drive office no later than 4:30 p.m. Friday or postmarked May 21, he said.
Applications are available throughout the county, including at the Board of Registrar’s office, any public library or the probate judge’s office at the county courthouse.
