MONTGOMERY (AP) — Alabama’s longest serving death row inmate, Thomas Whisenhant, appears to have run out of appeals and faces death by lethal injection.

The 63-year-old Whisenhant is scheduled to die at 6 p.m. Thursday in the death chamber at Holman Prison in Atmore for the 1976 rape and slaying of 24-year-old Sheryl Lynn Payton. She was kidnapped from the convenience store in Theodore where she worked as a clerk. Her body was later found mutilated.

Prisons spokesman Brian Corbett said Wednesday Whisenhant has been moved to a holding cell just feet away from the death chamber. Corbett said Whisenhant has been on death row for 31 years, 11 months and 25 days.

There have been no court filings this week seeking to stop the execution.
