The Andalusia City Board of Education Monday night reversed course on a decision made last month to outsource janitorial services, rescinding the bid awarded last month to X-tra Clean.

In May, the board awarded a cleaning bid for Andalusia Middle School and Andalusia High School to the local cleaning service.

At the recommendation of interim superintendent Ted Watson, those bids were rescinded and the system will “return where we were in terms of services before.”

Last month’s decision was met by objections from UNISERV representative Vivian Jones and “No privatization” signs with the Alabama Education Association (A.E.A) logo began to appear in the community.

Board chairman David Bryant said the decision was reversed because the timing was not right and the decision would have affected seven to nine custodial employees.

The board took no action to reverse other personnel decisions made last month, which included the non-renewal of contracts for five teachers, including chemistry and physics at AHS; English at AHS; math at AHS; social studies at AMS; and chorus at AHS and AMS.

The board approved the following personnel actions:

• Transfer of Donna Cauley from AHS computer apps/counselor to counselor.

• Transfer of Sandra Dendy from AMS fifth grade teacher to sixth grade social studies teacher.

• Hired Bobby Richardson as lunchroom manager at AES.

• Hired Latoya Sheridan as a bus driver.

• Hired Lucretia Hawkins as an AES fourth grade teacher.

• Hired Bridget Harper, Traneshia Stoudemire and Malorie Wells as AES fifth grade teachers.

• Hired Will Cammack as a special ed paraprofessional at AES.

• Hired Donna Kelley as a special ed paraprofessional at AHS.

The board also accepted resignations from:

• Claire Walters, AES paraprofessional special ed.

• Deb Hughes, AES fourth and fifth grade science teacher.

The board’s next meeting is set for 6 p.m. on Thurs., June 24, in the central office. Watson said there will be several personnel items on that agenda, including hiring replacements for the two recent resignations and dealing with the principal’s job at Andalusia Middle School.
