County commissioners signed two agreements Monday that will bring in more than $250,000 to repair damages from December flooding.

The county sustained an estimated $6 million in damages to more than 60 local roadways in December as rains caused flooding, road closures and bridge damages.

The county is still awaiting word on when or if Federal Emergency Management Agency funding will arrive to cover the cost of repairing the damages.

Monday’s first agreement, which is with the state Natural Resource Conservation Service’s (NCRS) Emergency Watershed Protection program, totaled $130,435 and will be used to complete five projects throughout the county.

The second agreement, which is with the Alabama Department of Transportation, totaled $149,902 in federal highway funds and will be used to repair portions of seven county roads, said County engineer Darren Capps. Work on these projects on county roads 59, 41, 40, 42, 45 and 77, should be completed in the coming days, Capps said.

“After we sign these agreements and submit them, we can get paid,” Capps said. “As for the NCRS projects, this is just the first step in the process. We’re still a ways off before getting ready to go to work on those.”

In other business, the commission:

• heard from residents on the possibility of paving in the Hogfoot Road area. Ralph Bass said 17 families live on the road and discussions were held in the late 1950s about paving the road.

• approved the FY2009 final settlement of ad valorem collections. Revenue Commissioner Janice Hart said all but $417.43 of the more than $11.3 million had been collected; $12,596 was classified as errors and $15,406 was currently in litigation, meaning the property was either in bankruptcy or in foreclosure.

• declared miscellaneous items from the sheriff’s office as surplus and set them for sale on govdeals.com and approved an out-of-state-travel request for the department.

• approved the senior aide host agency agreement with the Southeast Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission that will allow the county to fill three senior aide positions for $900 a year.

• awarded a low bid of $37,000 to C&H Construction for a 2002 Mac dump truck.

• authorized bids for construction of the industrial access road at the South Alabama Regional Airport, that will allow access to the new building behind Sitel. Estimated cost of the project is $250,000.

• gave approval to fill three vacancies in the engineer’s office.

• appointed Roslyn Wright to the county Department of Human Resources board to fill the unexpired term of the late Dr. Bill Davidson.
