It’s food, family and fireworks this 4th of July weekend

There’s not just one thing that’s on the mind of Covington County residents this Fourth of July holiday weekend, it’s three – food, fireworks and family.

But, not necessarily in that order.

For Red Level’s Robin and Marty Thompson, family comes first.

“We’ve got people coming from Texas, Louisiana, Tennessee, Mississippi, North Carolina and South Carolina – in fact, we’re calling this our family/friend pool party,” said Marty Thompson. Guests, whose exact numbers were unknown, began arriving Thursday for the festivities.

“This is going to be an awesome, three-day party,” he said. “We’re going to sit by the pool, grill some hamburgers and hotdogs, and have some barbeque, but the best thing is going to be the karaoke contest. We’re even thinking about having an Iron Man contest, but that’s up in the air right now.

“You can bet, whatever we do, we’re going to have a great time doing it,” he and his wife agreed.

Mother and daughter Regina and Shauna Wright of Andalusia had food at the top of their list – ribs, to be exact.

“That’s where we’re going to start – eating, sitting by the pool with lots of family, food and fireworks,” said mom Regina. “We’ll probably start with a bunch of fireworks at home before coming back to Andalusia and enjoying the show.

“For us, this holiday is the whole weekend long,” she said.

For the grandmother and grandson duo, Shirley and Ethan Flowers, the weekend means fun at the lake.

“Shooting fireworks is the best part,” Ethan said.

Shirley said the family is celebrating the holiday today with a get-together at the family’s Gantt home.

“We’ll just enjoy our time together,” she said.
