Florala officials are trying to narrow-down a 17-item roadway projects list and decide which to tackle in the upcoming fiscal year.

“The main reason for throwing this out now is that at the next meeting we’re going to approve the budget, and I’d like to have a pretty good idea as to what road or roads we want to tackle in the next fiscal year,” Mayor Robert Williamson said. “I’ve asked (assistant county engineer) Lynn Rawls to have an estimated cost for the roads; how many homes on the road; whether or not it’s grant eligible, and other pertinent information.

“All (roads on the list are) in dire need of attention, but obviously we don’t have the funding to address every one of them,” he said.

Williamson asked council members to study the list so that a decision can be made at the next meeting.

On the list, Sixth Street, from Begonia Street to Wood Avenue, has been ranked by the city street department as the worst in the city. It also includes 13th Avenue, behind Evans Funeral Home; Caton Road; Lakeshore Boulevard; Rodney J. Evans; Washington Avenue; McDuffie Road; Fir Street, between 2nd Avenue and 3rd Avenue; Cypress Street; Gum Street; 11th Street; Fourth Street; Virginia Avenue; Creech Road; and Alabama Street, north of Montgomery Street.

In other business, the council:

• committed to house the Florala Head Start Program on the Florala City Middle School property as long as the program is available and administered by the Southeast Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission. Building maintenance will also be provided by the city.
