Despite shelling out a 58-40 season-opening win over Luverne Thursday night in boys varsity basketball action, Andalusia coach Richard Robertson said his team still has a “long ways to go.”

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 10-2 early lead in the first period, and outscored the visiting Tigers 16-9.

By halftime, Andalusia bumped up its lead to 32-18.

Next Monday, the Bulldogs will travel to face Class 6A opponent Dothan; and then on Thurs., Nov. 18, Andalusia will host Enterprise, another 6A school. Next weekend, the Bulldogs will also compete in the Enterprise Classic tournament from Nov. 20-22.

“We’re in trouble right now with what we’ve got coming up,” Robertson said. “We played a little defense, but the offense kept getting fouled, missing lay ups, easy shots and free throws. We didn’t execute the game plan. The plan was a good plan.”

Andalusia was 17-of-30 from the free throw line Thursday night.

Robertson said in order for his team to be successful against Dothan and Enterprise next week, they’ll have to step it up a little bit.

“We want to get you in foul trouble in order to make free throws,” he said. “What our guys have got to realize is that they’ve got to make their shots.

“I expect better results,” he said. “I’ve got to have floor leadership. We’re a senior-oriented basketball team, but we’ve got to act like it.”

After half time, Andalusia went on to outscore Luverne 15-10 in the third period. In the fourth, Luverne outscored Andalusia 12-11.

Andalusia’s Quayshaun Denson led the Bulldogs with 15 points.

“We’d like to thank our crowd for coming out and giving us their support,” Robertson said. “We ask for their continued support. We’ve got a long ways to go.”

In B-team boys action, the Bulldogs fell 23-19.
