Charges against the two men suspected of burglarizing Christ the King Catholic Church mounted Friday.

Joshua Shane Richburg, 29, and Andrew Lee Mitchell, 22, were arrested Wednesday, and each charged with one count of third-degree burglary, third-degree theft of property and second-degree receiving stolen property.

The two are accused of stealing sacramental wine, cash and other valuables from inside the church.

Lt. Barney Tyree of the Andalusia Police Department said Friday after examining and receiving estimates of the physical damage inside the Sanford Road church, the two face an additional charge of first-degree criminal mischief.

“There was more than $11,000 in damage to the doors, file cabinets and things of that nature; however, the item that was the most damaged was a gilded brass tabernacle that was located behind where the priest stands,” Tyree said. “It was pried open, and its value – more than $7,000. It was sacred to the church and damaged beyond repair.”

That charge brought with it an additional $150,000 bond, Tyree said.

“Mr. Mitchell also has another unrelated charge that was added to his list,” he said. “He has been charged with receiving stolen property that involved a stolen laptop.”

The two men were taken into custody on Wednesday and are being held in the Covington County Jail – Mitchell, under a $750,000 bond and Richburg, a $600,000 bond. Additionally, Richburg has a hold for failing to register as a convicted sex offender.
