At least one set of state officials are set to perform a “walk-through inspection” at Florala’s new community center and amphitheater Monday.

Robert “Sonny” Foster, construction superintendent for the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, said Friday the project lacks only a “little sprucing” up to be considered complete.

“Things are looking good out here,” Foster said. “They should be through with the concrete sidewalks in the next day or so. The stage is poured, and the electrician is wiring it up. There are only a few odds and ends to finish before we can schedule the final walk-through.”

Foster said he is currently trying to coordinate a final inspection with the building commission, so that a grand opening can be held in December.

“Hopefully, before Christmas, too,” Foster said of the building’s opening. “We’re trying to get (the Alabama Department of Transportation) to get to paving the parking lot. I don’t think it’s going to be a problem. It just comes down to scheduling.”

Foster said crews have spent the last few months finishing the buildings interior, landscaping the exterior and renovating the outdoor amphitheater where crews installed a 3-inch concrete overlay and safety railing, as well as an outdoor stage.

“It looks very, very nice,” he said. “The amphitheater is awesome. There’s no other word to describe it.”
