Students at Andalusia Elementary School were “all ears” Thursday as they were treated to a taste test of roasted corn from Dady’s Roasted Corn from Westville, Fla.

Andalusia City School Child Nutrition Program Director Stephanie Dillard said the event was funded as a part of a $54,000 food and vegetable grant designed to helped combat childhood obesity teaching healthy eating habits.

The program works by introducing school children to a variety of produce that they otherwise might not have the opportunity to sample.

“It’s something different, and for most of the students it’s something new,” Dillard said.

AES Principal Patty Taylor said it’s “out of the box.”

“It’s easy to do fruits, but veggies are more difficult to find things the students like,” she said.

Fifth graders were the first to taste test and all seemed pleased with the samples of roasted corn with Parmesan cheese, salt and ranch dressing.

“It’s the best corn I’ve ever had,” said fifth grader Amier Gantt.

Shayanta Lawson said it was the first time she’d tried roasted corn.

“I loved it. I tried it with ranch dressing and cheese,” she said. “I’m glad we got this experience.”

Katelynne Ammons labeled the corn “the best corn in the world.”
