The First South Farm Credit team of Russell Walters and Hunter Grimes won “best overall” in Covington County’s Wild Game Cook-off with their “deer filet mignon.”

The event, a fundraiser for the Alabama Wildlife Federation, was held last night at the Covington Center Arena.

Walters said he served the venison with a side of one of his tried-and-true dishes, tomato pie, which he usually serves with quail. The venison was seasoned with Southern Flavor, he said, adding it’s available at the Farmer’s Co-op.

Teams competed in three different categories. The Smokin Ashes team of Davey and Addie Sightler, Fletcher and Michelle Spicer placed in all three categories. Their Cajun cornbread and shrimp won first place in the fish category.

Addie Sightler said her husband, Davey, has been participating in the event for years. She joined the team three years ago and loves it. Last year, she convinced her daughter and son-in-law to join in.

“We have a good time,” Sightler said. Last year the team won the Covington County event and advanced to state. “We didn’t win, but we really enjoyed it.”

Russell Walters slices tomato pie to serve with deer filet mignon, judged the night’s best dish.

The Cook-Off also included a silent auction and a raffle.

The Alabama Army National Guard is the title sponsor for all of the state’s AWF Cook-offs.
