New program offers motherly advice

New moms often have cares, questions and concerns they would like to share with others in their same situation.
Now, they will have an opportunity as Andalusia’s first chapter of Mothers of Preschoolers or “MOPS” opens.
Sandy King, one of the local organizers, said the MOPS program is a perfect networking opportunity for mothers with children age birth to kindergarten.
“This program is designed to encourage, support and nurture mothers,” King said. “It celebrates motherhood, and it’s about meeting their needs, making connections and experiencing God’s love through resources and relationships.”
King said the program is open to all moms.
“As long as your child is in the age range, it doesn’t matter where you live, if you stay at home or if you work, if you’re a teen mom, if you’re single or married,” she said. “If you are looking for a place to meet new friends and provide support, this is the place for you.”
King said meetings will begin in January and will be held monthly from 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church. Registration will be held on Dec. 6 and 7 from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the church.
It is a nondenominational program, she said. Childcare will be provided.
“The goal is help mothers be the best mother they can be,” King said. “We feel like there are a lot of mothers out there that could benefit from this and use the support.
“This is not a ‘Mothers Day Out’ thing,” she said, speaking of the childcare program at First Baptist Church. “This is strictly for the mothers. It’s an exciting program.”
There is an annual fee of $23.95, which is due at registration; however, King said that scholarships are available.
“We don’t want any mother to not come because of money,” she said. “We will pay their way. We want them to come for the benefit it will give them.”
Those unable to pre-register can register at the first meeting, which is Jan. 7; or pick up a registration packet at the church anytime.
