The Cowen-Courson Farm became the first farm in Covington County to be recognized as the Alabama Century & Hertitage Farm of the year this week.

The program was established in 1976, and the department of agriculture and industries has recognized more than 500 farms across the state.

The family’s farm is located about 2 miles northeast of Opp on Hwy. 84, has been owned and operated by the family for more than 100 years.

“The property was originally acquired on Oct. 29, 1910, by Fredrick Daniel Cowen, the great-grandfather of Ben Courson,” said Dr. Tony Frazier, state veterinarian. “Today Ben and his wife, Elizabeth, own and operate the farm where they grow cotton, peanuts, hay, oats and corn as well as raise cattle. In the past, the family has also grown soybeans, watermelons and pecans.”

Elizabeth accepted the award.
