Opp picked up its first win of the season on Friday night, beating Florala 38-36 at the 44th annual Andalusia Invitational Tournament.

Opp coach Ronnie Sansom said a win is a win, and he’s glad to have one right now.

“There’s no such thing as a bad win,” Sansom said. “It was good to get that monkey off of our backs. We’ve been playing hard. (Florala) hit some shots tonight, and we did some good things with our press, and I was pleased with that.”

OHS will have to return to the court tonight at 5 p.m. to face Luverne for a chance at fifth place.

Luverne is in the same area in Class 3A as the Bobcats, and Sansom said it’ll be a good tune up to area play come January.

“A good thing about (today) is it’s giong to be a good dress rehearsal for our area,” he said. “To me, (Luverne is) the team to beat in the area.”

Florala and Opp were tied 19-19 at half time, and 29-29 at the end of the third period.

The Wildcats kept up with the Bobcats during the final period of the contest, but a combination of good nights from Steadman Gerber and Tyler Harrison gave Opp the edge in the win.

Opp held the 38-36 win by stepping up on both offense and defense, Sansom said.

“I was pleased overall with our execution,” Sansom said. “We made some adjustments at the end of the game, and offensively and defensively, they did well handling that in a tight ball game.”

Harrison led the Bobcats with 14 points, and Gerber added 12 points.

For Florala, J.B. Burleson led the Wildcats with 17 points, and Erik Vega had 14 points.
