A “Code Adam” prank call brought shopping to a screeching halt at the Andalusia Wal-Mart Friday.

Reports indicate at approximately 9:30 p.m a a bogus caller reported that a 4-year-old girl had been forgotten at the store. The call prompted store officials to “lock down” the store.

Law enforcement – which included personnel from the Andalusia Police Department, the Covington County Sheriff’s Office and Alabama State Troopers – and Wal-Mart security officials immediately began canvassing inside the store and the outside parking lot. Cars were searched.

Within an hour, it was determined the call was bogus.

“The call supposedly came from a concerned parent who was on their way back to the store to pick up the child,” APD’s Lt. Paul Dean said. “After an hour of searching every possible avenue to find the child and no concerned parent showed up, we knew then it was a hoax.”

Dean said police have no leads as to the source of the call.
