An Opp man is accused of fleeing from police after he allegedly burglarized a local business.

Justin Maurice Spencer, 20, was arrested Monday and charged with theft of property, burglary, obstruction of governmental operations, resisting arrest and giving a false identity to obstruct justice.

Chief Nickey Carnley said Opp officers were dispatched Monday in reference to a theft in progress.

“Upon arrival, officers made contact with Mr. Spencer, who eluded officers for several blocks before being located and arrested on Hardin Street,” Carnley said.

Carnley said it was discovered that four vehicle rims and a Ken-Tool bead-breaking hammer were stolen; however, all the items were recovered and returned to the owner.

Spencer was booked into the Covington County Jail and held on a $29,000 bond on the theft-related charges. Carnley said Spencer remains in jail on a violation of probation charge, which carries no bond.

The case remains under investigation, he said.
