All 10-year-old Emmy Rabren wanted this Christmas was to make someone else’s holiday a little sweeter.

She got her wish when she donated a brand new bicycle to the Andalusia Community Christmas drive.

“I go to Mt. Gilead (Baptist Church), and we do the Awana program,” said the Straughn Elementary fourth grader. “We had a thing going that if you earned 150 Awana bucks by May you could get a bicycle. I did it, but I asked if they would wait and let me get it at Christmas so I could donate it to Community Christmas.”

Awana is anationally known children’s ministry that focuses on raising children and youth to know, love and serve Christ. A number of Covington County churches feature the program on Wednesday nights.

Children earn “bucks” by participating in class, doing simple tasks, learning Bible verses and such.

“I came up with the idea last year,” Rabren said of the donation. “My family has always done a Community Christmas angel, and I thought it would be great to donate a bike because that’s what a lot of little girls want.”

Rabren said her donations made her feel proud.

“I have a pretty new bicycle already,” she said. “So, it made me feel really good to donate this one. It made my mom and dad proud and the people at church, too. Everyone thought it was a good idea, and that I was really nice and sweet to do it.”

Rabren is the daughter of Doug and Kim Rabren of Andalusia.

Her donation will join the gifts for the 600-plus angels set to be distributed Friday at 6:30 p.m.

“This illustrates the meaning of Christmas and what Community Christmas focuses on,” said Community Christmas organizer Larry Avery. “That is putting other people’s needs ahead of our own and trying to bring joy to another person’s life.”

Those attending the event should remember that a ticket is necessary for entry into the Kiwanis building.
