Construction is under way on the new Gantt Dollar General store.

On Tuesday, contractors were busy doing site preparation work, and workers were getting ready to pour the store’s concrete foundation, said Town Clerk Christy Cartwright.

“As soon as that is done, from what I understand, the metal building will go up fairly quickly,” Cartwright said. “We haven’t been given an opening date, yet, but we hope it’s soon.”

The new retail store, which is located next to Green’s BBQ, is the first of its kind in Gantt and was quickly heralded by city leaders for the influx of sales tax revenue it will bring.

“The store is located outside the city limits, but it is inside the police jurisdiction,” Cartwright said. “So what that means is that instead of getting 1 percent sales tax, we get half-a-percent, as well as the revenue from the store’s water usage. We’re still very happy about that. Revenue is revenue.”

Once completed, this will be the corporation’s second new location in the county this year. The Red Level Dollar General store opened in November and employs eight.
