Many Andalusians remember Don and Barbara (Kimbro) Ganus.

Don (AHS Class of 1955) lettered in football, baseball and track and played third base for the Milwaukee Braves for eight years.

When Ganus returned to Andalusia, Charley Cope put him to work in the insurance industry and eventually sent him to Waycross, Ga.

“He was a scratch golfer,” Charley Cope said. “I’ve seen him start playing right hand, and stop half-way to go get his left-hand clubs if he wasn’t having a good day.”

Cope recalled that Ganus won the Andalusia Country Club golf championship playing right-handed and the Greenville championship playing left-handed.

“He was a great athlete,” Cope recalled.

Ganus had a grandson, Holt Rowland, who also was a great athlete. Like his grandfather, Holt was a baseball player.

Last summer, he traveled to the Dominican Republic with 100 other coaches, players and parents on a Fellowship of Christian Athletes trip that used baseball as a platform to lead people to Christ.

His parents said he walked away from his trip “forever changed.” His FCA coach said, “I don’t know that I’ve ever known a kid as mature in his faith as Holt. He wasn’t shy about his faith at any level.”

Holt’s life ended tragically last month as a result of an automobile wreck which also claimed the life of another teen.

A Fellowship of Christian Athletes fund has been established in Holt’s name to provide scholarships to other baseball players interested in participating in a mission to the Dominican Republic. Holt is survived by his parents, Dave and Kim Ganus Rowland of Blackshear; a brother, Hunter Rowland of Blackshear; his maternal grandparents, Don and Barbara Ganus of Blackshear; his paternal grandparents, David and Joyce Rowland of Waycross; three aunts, Sandi and Kevin Sport of Patterson and Lisa and Les Evans and Pam and Tommy Sweeney all of Waycross; five cousins, LeAnna Evans, Leslie Evans, Kaitlyn Young, Kassie Milton and Kalyn Milton, and several other relatives and friends.
