The Opp City Council Monday night voted to give $4,435 to the South Central Alabama Mental Health Center for new buses.

The funds will be used to assist with the more than $44,000 in matching funds needed by SCAMHB to acquire five vans from the department of transportation.

Board member Allen Miller said the center’s current vans have high mileage and are “worn out.”

“These vans basically serve to take the patients to the facility,” he said. “This plays a very important role in the community. We appreciate any help we can get. This will help keep these people functioning within the community.”

Opp Mayor H.D. Edgar made the recommendation the city give 10 percent of the more than $44,000 needed.

The vans are expected to arrive within the next three weeks.

In other business, the city council voted to secure funding to purchase a new E-1 fire truck for the Opp Fire Department.

“These last for many, many years,” Edgar said. “These will also help us maintain our fire rating.”

Councilman Jimmy Rogers said the last time the city purchased a new fire truck was in 1999.

Edgar said there city is discussing selling an older model fire truck, if it can receive a good price on it.

“Fire equipment isn’t cheap,” he said. “If we can’t find a good offer, we’ll just keep it.”

Additionally, the city issued a resolution honoring newly named ADO director Seth Hammett, who previously served as Speaker of the House.
