Betty Sue Richardson, 71, of Red Level, died Thurs., Jan. 6, 2011, in a Montgomery hospital.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Sun., Jan. 9, at South Church of God with the Rev. Jason Justice officiating and interment following in the church cemetery.

She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Dewayne Griggs of Red Level and Kathy and Dennis Parker of Summerville, S.C.; sons, Tommy Jones of Las Vegas and Michael Wayne Jones and Loomis Eugene Jones of Red Level; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Lacey Edwards of Texas; sisters, Mildred Fisher of Jacksonville, Fla., Odessa Smith of Hope Hull and Shirley Turner of Pensacola, Fla.

Pallbearers will be Anthony Griggs, Michael Garrett, John Potter, Sean Jones, D. P. Parker and Damien Tyler.

GEORGE THOMAS CANANT

George Thomas Canant, 78, of Andalusia, died Thurs., Jan. 6, 2011, in an Opp nursing facility.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Sun., Jan. 9, at Foreman Brown-Service Funeral Home with Brother Mike Wilcox officiating and interment following at Antioch Cemetery.

Visitation will be after 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Foreman’s.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Canant of Andalusia; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Charlie Brown of Columbiana and Donna and Ricky Bass of Andalusia; sons and daughter-in-law, Allen and Mirian Canant of Andalusia and Lee Canant of Jackson, Miss.; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Vivian Cobb and Carol Rogers of Marianna, Fla.; and brother, Phillip Canant of Charleston, S.C.

Pallbearers will be Jeb Brown, Nick Bass, Jake Brown, Mac Canant, Eddie Powell and Jarod Speer.

SARAH PORTER GREEN

Sarah Porter Green, 88, passed away on Jan. 4, 2011.

Funeral services will be held on Tues., Jan. 11, at 11 a.m., at First Baptist Church, Whatley Street, with the Rev. Johnny R. Davis officiating.

Visitation will be held Monday from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Kirk’s Funeral Chapel.

She is a descendant of Ben Gilbert and Sarah Fowler Gilbert. She was the second daughter of Tyson and Rebecca Porter and the wife of the Rev. Isaac Green Sr., who preceded her Dec. 9, 1999.

Mrs. Green lived a very productive life of service. She taught in the state of New York at the state school for children with challenges, teaching some of the children how to walk and talk – one of whom even became a New York state legislator. She was active in the civil rights movement, a participant in the Poor People’s Campaign of 1968 and the NAACP. She was an honored sportswoman, winning several trophies for bowling and also playing softball well into her 50s.

She was a member of the following organizations: Deacons and Ministers Wives Ministry; Sunday school teacher, where she occasionally served as the superintendent; the missionary department; and as a member and secretary of the Independent Pallbearers Association.

One of her most cherished and identifying marks is that she believed in being on time, and she was always on time, often waiting for others to show up. On Jan. 4, 2011, she was on time when her Lord and Master gave the call. She answered present and accounted for, and she is now resting, awaiting the final call when all of God’s children will hear the call when the dead in Christ shall rise first, and then, we, who are alive and remain, will be called up together with them who now sleep in the Lord to meet Him in the air and forever go and live with our Creator, God.

She is survived by four loving children, Willie Lee (Dorothy) Thomas, Pricilla Howard Woods, Ralph Green and Isaac (Brenda) Green Jr.; sisters, Catherine Cobb, Ethel (Vernon) Poindexter and Vnetter (Talmadge) Davidson; brother, Tyson (Betty) Porter Jr.; sister, Mary Ellen Porter; 19 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; a host of relatives, nephews, nieces, cousins and friends, with special thanks to Gloria James and Peggy James for all their devoted care.
