The Opp Police Department this week moved from eight-hour shifts to 12-hour shifts, officials said this week.

The decision was made in October at the request of chief Nickey Carnley, who said the change would now include four, 12-hour shifts as opposed to three, eight-hour shifts.

Carnley said the change would benefit the officers.

“It makes us more competitive to attract, good quality officers,” he said. “This allows the officers more time off.”

Additionally, it also allows the city to have more police officers on the road.
