KINSTON — Pleasant Home’s girls varsity basketball team tried a few new things out on offense, and came away with a 39-11 area victory over Kinston on Tuesday night.

The Lady Eagles outscored the Lady Bulldogs 11-2 in the first period, and 13-7 in the second period to take a commanding 24-9 lead at half time.

“It’s an area win,” PHS girls coach Kelley Garner said. “We’re glad to get it. We’re just trying some different combinations on offense. We’ve been having a hard time scoring, so we just tried some new things tonight.”

Those new things for the Lady Eagles led to an early 5-0 run in the third period by leading scorer Raven Woods. Woods led Pleasant Home with 13 points.

Drives to the basket for PHS, led the Lady Eagles to take a 38-9 lead going into the fourth period.

Garner said the new offense looked “good” on Tuesday night.

“It was working pretty good,” she said. “It’s just new, and we’re still trying to figure it out. We’re just struggling offensively and we’re trying anything we can.”

The Lady Eagles improve to 6-8 overall, and 2-1 in Class 1A, Area 2. The girls will play Geneva County on Friday night to continue play in area.

It was a low-scoring affair in the fourth period, as Kinston managed to outscore Pleasant Home 2-1.

Pleasant Home’s Taylor Godwin added seven points in the win. Kendra Bryan, Mary Schwartz and Erica Bullard added five points each.

On the defensive side of the ball, Garner said the girls did what they always do.

“We hustled like we do every night,” she said. “We’ve got a new defense now. I just thought our quickness and hustle got us some steals and lay ups, which is what we need.”

M. Wambles led Kinston with three points.

Garner added the team is still trying to find what makes them tick.

“They’ve all hustled and worked,” Garner said. “We’ve just struggled, and nobody’s going to throw in the towel. We’re still trying to find our identity.”
