Every year around this time, there’s a rush to buy red, turquoise, purple and green boxes of Girl Scout cookies, and people will soon have the opportunity to get their hands on a box or two.
Local Girls Scout troops are part of the Girls Scouts of Southern Alabama, which includes Covington County along with 29 other counties.
The official sale of Girl Scout cookies kicked off Jan. 4, and will continue until March 13.
Proceeds from the cookie sales go to support the girls in their future actitivies, while at the same time, it gives each girl self-esteem, according to Girl Scout officials.
Girl Scout cookies have been around for the past 94 years.
Joea McNeil, a troop leader in Florala, said her troop is selling all types of cookies, including Samoas, Do-Si-Dos, Tagalongs, Thank U Berry Much, Lemonades, Dulce de Leche, Lemon Chalet Cremes, Thanks-a-lot, Trefoils, Shout Outs! and Thin Mints.
Each box sells for $3.50.

Samoas

These are doughnut-shaped cookies with a hole in the center, covered in caramel and toasted cocunut, and then striped with chocolate. Samoas are made by Little Brownie Bakers and Caramel deLites are made by ABC.

These cookies come in a purple box.

Do-Si-Dos

A sandwich cookie. The round, bumpy perforated oatmeal cookies top and bottom surrounds a peanut butter-flavored layer inside.

Do-Si-Dos are baked by Little Brownie Bakers. ABC Bakers calls them Peanut Butter Sandwiches. These cookies come in an orange box.

Lemonades

Introduced in 2006, these shortbread cookies are stamped in teh shape of a sliced lemon with a tangy lemon icing. They are made by ABC bakers and come in a yellow box.

Trefoils

These shortbread cookies are shaped like the Girl Scout Trefoil design. These cookies come in a blue box. Little Brownie Bakers calls them Trefoils, while ABC Bakers calls them Short-bread.

Thanks-A-Lot

A shortbread cookie with a layer of fudge on the bottom and the words “Thank You” in English, French, Chinese, Swahili or Spanish embossed on the top. Thanks-A-Lots have been made by ABC Bakers since 2006, they come in a turquoise box.

Tagalongs

These are round cookies with a layer of peanut butter on top and covered in chocolate. These cookies come in a red box. Little Brownie Bakers calls them Tagalongs, while ABC Bakers calls them Peanut Butter Patties.

Shout Outs!

Light and crisp, these Belgian-style caramelized cookies are a sensibly sweet treat.

Thin Mints

The most enduring and universally familiar Girl Scout cookie. These round, mint-flavored cookies covered with dark chocolate perennially sell the most boxes of any cookie Thin Mints come in a green box.

An early recipe

1 cup butter
1 cup sugar plus additional amound for topping
2 eggs
2 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking powder

Cream butter and the cup of sugar; add well-beaten eggs, then milk, vanilla, flour, salt, and baking powder. Refrigerate for at least one hour. Roll dough, cut into trefoil shapes, and sprinkle sugar on top. Bake at 375 degrees for eight to 10 minutes.
