Lake building awaiting final OK

Construction at the Florala’s Rodney J. Evans Conference Center is finished, Sonny Foster, state construction superintendent for the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, said Friday.

“We’re scheduled for our final inspection next Thursday,” Foster said. “As soon as we get our checklist and see what’s been found during the inspection with the building commission, we can get that fixed and get the doors open.

“I would say that could be as soon as February, depending on what is found,” he said.

Foster said weather and scheduling issues had previously prevented inspection of the building.

He said crews have spent the last several months finishing the building’s interior, landscaping the exterior and renovating the outdoor amphitheater where crews installed a 3-inch concrete overlay and safety railing, as well as an outdoor stage.

It is unknown when state officials will be taking reservations for the new facility, which is equipped with a concession area and meeting room that can seat up to 700 people. In the rear, a 600-seat amphitheater was “carved” into the hillside facing the lake.

State officials hope local residents use the facility for events such as reunions and weddings.
