County sales tax collections have jumped more than 7 percent from this time last year, said county administrator Brenda Petty.

Reports show the county collected $1,745,150 during October, November and December of 2009. In 2010 for that same period, the county collected $1,871,516 for a 7.24 percent increase.

“If you look at the individual month’s collections, there was only a $12,186 increase from November to December (2010),” Petty said. “It’s a very small increase, but an increase nonetheless. However, when you compare the year-to-date totals for (the three month period), the increase is great – 7.24 percent.

“I’m thinking that our largest remittance of the 2010 year should come next month when December sales taxes are remitted in January,” she said. “That’s good news for us all.”

In October, the county collected $585,836; in November, $636,747; and in December, $648,933.

Even though experts say the recession ended last summer, the national economy has not rebounded; however, local sales tax collections in Andalusia, Opp and Florala have been remarkably stable.
