HEADLAND — Andalusia’s Alexis Horton scored 23 points, and secured her team’s regular season area title, as the Lady Bulldogs came away with a 62-21 area victory over Headland on Tuesday night.

The Lady Bulldogs came out and led 19-7 at one point during the first period. Andalusia then went on to outscore the Lady Rams 16-6 in the second period to take a 39-15 lead at half time.

With this victory, Andalusia improves to 18-4 overall, and 6-0 in Class 4A, Area 3. Additionally, the Lady Bulldogs will find out who their opponent in the first round of the area tournament after Headland and Ashford face off on Friday night.

AHS girls coach Bennie Shellhouse said the difference in Tuesday night’s win was the post play in the middle.

“The difference in the game tonight early on was the point presence with Shi’Amber (Townsend),” Shellhouse said. “It’s real good for us to be 6-0 in the area going into the area tournament.”

Then, Shellhouse gave his second string players the opportunity to play in the game, which he said gave them a “big lift.”

The Lady Bulldogs outscored Headland 15-2 in the third period, and 8-4 in the fourth to get the win.

“My second group went in and outscored his group,” Shellhouse said. “That’s a big lift for the second group.”

Townsend contributed with 16 points for the Lady Bulldogs. Latrexius Trawick and Keona Hunter, both second-string players, scored nine points each.

Headland’s Elizabeth Chancey scored eight points.
