Where’s the beef?

For most, the catch phrase is synonymous with the huge media campaign pushing beef consumption in the U.S.

However, for one Montgomery-based law firm, it’s the question they’re posing to Taco Bell.

The firm, Beasley, Allen, Crow, Methvin, Portis & Miles, alleges that the meat found in Taco Bell tacos and other products is not all beef. Instead, it challenges the restaurant’s “practice of representing to consumers that its restaurants serve ‘seasoned ground beef’ or ‘seasoned beef’ filling in its products, when in fact a substantial amount of the filling contains substances other than beef,” the firm’s Web site states.

Hmmm.

The site further states, “The lawsuit seeks to require Taco Bell to properly advertise and label food items and to engage in a corrective advertising campaign to educate the public about the true content of its food products.”

It also says the firm has filed the suit on “behalf of all consumers.”

I know we don’t have a Taco Bell in Andalusia anymore, so they very well couldn’t have called me and asked my opinion on the matter. And while I think there is a Taco Bell in Opp, I don’t think for a second anyone there got asked if they wanted to see Taco Bell sued.

According to the firm, the substantial majority of the meat filling used inside Taco Bell’s products is comprised of substances other than beef and is required to be labeled and advertised as “taco meat filing.” Taco meat filling includes ingredients added to increase the volume of the product, such as binders and fillers like “isolated oat product.”

Taco Bell, of course, denies the claim.

Taco Bell buys the same brands of beef sold in supermarkets. He said the beef is simmered in a blend of seasonings.

Last time I went to Winn-Dixie, which was on Sunday, beef was about $3 a pound. So, my question is this: if you pay $1 for a taco, just how much beef do you think is inside there?

You get what you pay for.

I personally like Taco Bell as a quick meal on the go. It’s not my ultimate lunch destination, but I like a good burrito as much as the next person.

Makes me wonder: what’s the beef about the beef?
