The Navy sailor from Red Level injured last week in a motorcycle accident is making progress.

Cassie Carroll, a family friend for more than 30 years to his parents Elaine and Lamar Fowler, said their son, Cade, is awake and responsive.

“Cade’s ship was in port in Hawaii and right before he left the base, he posted on Facebook that he was about to ride his motorcycle and get some hot wings,” Carroll said. “He never made it,” she said. “Right outside the base gate, a man pulled out in front of him. Luckily, Cade had all of his motorcycle gear on. The doctor said his jacket saved his internal organs. The helmet gave him some protection, but the injuries were very bad.”

Carroll said doctors worked frantically to save the 22-year-old’s life. All of his facial bones were fractured, and he suffered a traumatic brain injury.

His parents flew to Hawaii immediately to be by his side, Carroll said.

“Elaine called (Wednesday) night and said the doctor’s are calling him a ‘miracle,’” she said. “He’s not out of the woods yet, and he has a long way to go before he can come home, but he’s making progress. The doctors are very hopeful. He’s responsive and speaking.”

Carroll said if Fowler’s condition holds stable, doctors hope to begin the reconstructive process today.

At present, the students of Red Level High School are organizing a bucket drive to help the family raise money. It is tentatively set for Sat., Feb. 5, in downtown Andalusia.
