Straughn swept Florala in boys and girls regular season action Friday night in Wildcat Country.

Josh Henderson led the Tigers with 16 points to help lead Straughn to a 48-42 win over Florala; Jacie Williamson scored 12 points in her team’s 42-39 win; and Straughn’s B-team won 26-11.

In varsity boys action, Florala led throughout the contest until the fourth quarter, where Straughn tied the game up 33-33, stepped up its pressure on defense and forced turnovers for easy baskets.

“At half time, we went in and we decided to press them all over the floor and tire them out,” SHS coach Rusty Andrews said. “We eventually just wore them down.”

Florala led 16-6 after the first period and 25-20 at half time in the loss.

FHS coach Brad Garner said the start was great, but late in the game, they couldn’t get back in it.

“We came out and had a really good first quarter,” Garner said. “We just couldn’t get back in it. They’re so much bigger than we are.”

Garner said with the absence of Hunter Oswald as his post player, he had to use his replacement the whole night.

“(Straughn) got some second chance points there in the fourth quarter,” Garner said. “Our kids scrapped and played about as hard as they could play. I was real pleased with their effort.”

Avery Driver had 12 points and J.D. Driver had 10 points for Straughn.

Tonight, the Tigers will travel to play Brantley.

Andrews said he wishes he could’ve not over played his players in preparation for tonight’s game against the Bulldogs.

“We’re looking forward to playing a lot better ball game (tonight),” he said. “We’ve gone from a slow down pace to an up tempo pace.

“The teams we’re playing now, we feel like we can compete and play up tempo with,” he added. “It’s now two seasons mixed into one.”

John Bess scored 12 points for Florala, and Lavoris Ball contributed with eight points.

In the girls game, Jacie Williamson scored 12 points for the Lady Tigers, and Anjelica Bonham had 11 points.

Paige Irwin led Florala with 15 points, and Justina Clissold had eight points.

Florala will play host to Red Level next Mon., Jan. 31, and will host Georgiana next Thurs., Feb. 3, for senior night.

Straughn will play host to Kinston on Monday night, and will play Red Level Tues., Feb. 1, for its senior night. The Tigers will end their week on the road at Pleasant Home on Fri., Feb. 4.
