Biting cold is expected to bring at least some snow flurries in Covington County in the hours before 9 a.m. today.

However, forecasts, which predict an 80 percent chance of rain, show that little to no accumulation is expected as temps warm to a daily high of 46.

“Believe it or not, this system is getting a lot of talk,” said Susan Harris, county emergency management agency director. “But we really had a better chance of snow with all of the previous systems.

“I don’t want to say it’s much ado over nothing, because then we’ll have the worst snow we’ve seen in years, but I will say we are prepared just in case it happens,” she said.

For the last several weeks, Harris said the county has prepared weekly for a snow threat.

“The sand is in the dump trucks, ready to go if we need it,” she said.

Tonight, the skies will clear, and temps will dip to a nightly low of 27. Friday is expected to be clear with a high of 56 and a low of 24.

Things will warm slightly over the weekend, with an expected high on Saturday of 62 and 68 on Sunday.

As of press-time, area schools plan to begin school at regularly scheduled times.
