It’s no secret that prescription pill abuse is an ongoing problem in Covington County.

And thanks to efforts by the Covington County Children’s Policy Council Coalition and local law enforcement officials, local teens will see the realities of this abuse through a play titled “59 Minutes: The Weak End.”

According to law enforcement statistics, 12.5 million underage teens drink alcohol each year and one in five abuse prescription pills. With this play, officials hope to bring attention to the ongoing problem.

The event will be held Feb. 23–25, from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m., at the Andalusia Police Training Facility.

Brandy Smith, play organizer and administrative assistant for the Andalusia Police Department, said she has only had a few groups to reserve spots.

“I ask that if you have anything over 10, that you make a reservation,” she said. “If it’s cold, I don’t want anyone to have to stand out in the cold.”

Additionally, Smith said she still needs extras for the majority of the scenes and anyone interested should call her at the police department this week.

The play, which consists of 10 scenes, begins with a group of teenagers hanging out at a local parking lot and then attending a party, where prescription drugs and alcohol are involved.

The teens are involved in an accident, and two of the characters are seriously injured and at least one dies. The final scene shows one of the teenagers being escorted to jail and then tells his life story.
