Local cities have a little extra jingle in their pockets after sales tax collections for the month of December were up over last year’s levels and the previous month’s.

The city of Andalusia reported a collection of $469,333 for December 2010, which was remitted in January.

Andalusia collected $468,992 for December 2009.

December’s numbers were a significant increase from $398,691 collected in November.

“We continue to feel very good about sales tax collections in Andalusia considering we’re seeing stability at a time when much of the state, region and nation are dealing with steep declines in revenue,” said John Thompson, Andalusia city clerk.

The City of Opp saw its biggest month since June 2009, which had the highest collections in the last five years, in December.

The city had collected $172,022 in December, which was up from $166,702 collected in December 2009 and up from November’s $162,538.

“We are pleased with our collections for the last few months and we hope that continues,” City Clerk Connie Smith said.

Smith was unsure of the reasons for the spike.
