Opp Mayor H.D. Edgar said this week that the downtown revitalization project is about a month from being completed.

The city began work on the downtown project, which included work on East and West Covington Avenues and Main Street in September 2009.

West Covington Avenue is the final portion of the nearly year-and-a-half-long project.

The downtown area has received upgrades that include new post street lighting, new sidewalks, street paving and landscaping.

The city launched the project with a goal of increasing pedestrian access in the downtown area.

As part of the project, the city switched to two four-way stop intersections, in an attempt to slow down the traffic.

The city also hopes that with the newly redesigned downtown, the business to downtown merchants will pick up.

“With the bypass coming to Opp, it took a lot of business from our downtown merchants,” Edgar said. “We hope by making Opp more eye-appealing and putting signs to draw people off the bypass, it will make people stop and trade with our gas stations, restaurants and other merchants.”

The project has been paid for by a Alabama Department of Transportation grant with the city supplying 20 percent of the construction costs.
